CREATING A LASTING LEGACY: NIGERIA’S IEE, ENMS/ESO AND RECP CENTRE

Looking Beyond the Life of a Project

Every successful development project eventually reaches an important question:

What happens next?

While projects have defined timelines, their impact should continue long after implementation has ended.

Recognising this, the GEF–UNIDO Industrial Energy Efficiency (IEE) and Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RECP) Project placed significant emphasis on creating institutional structures that would sustain its achievements.

One of the most important outcomes was the development and validation of the business strategy for Nigeria’s proposed IEE, EnMS/ESO and RECP Centre.

Why a National Centre Matters

Over the years, the project built considerable expertise across industries, government institutions, academia, technical organisations, and the private sector.

The proposed Centre is designed to preserve and expand this knowledge by serving as a national platform for:

  • Technical support
  • Capacity development
  • Energy management promotion
  • Cleaner production advisory services
  • Research and knowledge sharing
  • Stakeholder collaboration

Rather than allowing valuable experience to fade, the Centre provides a pathway for continuity.

Supporting Industry Beyond the Project

The Centre is expected to help industries continue improving their energy performance and resource efficiency through access to technical guidance, training, and best practices.

It also creates opportunities for ongoing collaboration among government, industry, financial institutions, development partners, and academia.

In doing so, it strengthens Nigeria’s capacity to pursue sustainable industrial development over the long term.

Building on a Strong Foundation

The success of any institution depends on the strength of the foundation beneath it.

The years of stakeholder engagement, technical assistance, policy dialogue, and capacity building delivered through the GEF–UNIDO IEE & RECP Project have created that foundation.

The Centre represents the next chapter in Nigeria’s industrial sustainability journey.

A Legacy That Continues

Projects conclude.

Institutions endure.

The establishment of a national IEE, EnMS/ESO and RECP Centre reflects a commitment to ensuring that the knowledge, partnerships, and momentum created through the project continue to benefit Nigerian industries for years to come.

That is the true measure of sustainable development.
