FROM KNOWLEDGE TO ACTION: HOW CAPACITY BUILDING IS STRENGTHENING INDUSTRIAL SUSTAINABILITY IN NIGERIA

Knowledge Is the Foundation of Change

New technologies and policies can accelerate industrial transformation, but lasting progress begins with people. When professionals understand why change is needed and how to implement it, sustainable practices become part of everyday operations rather than short-term initiatives.

This philosophy shaped the capacity-building efforts of the GEF–UNIDO Industrial Energy Efficiency (IEE) and Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RECP) Project in Nigeria.

Building Skills Across Sectors

Throughout the project, engineers, energy managers, policymakers, manufacturers, financial institutions, media professionals, and technical experts participated in workshops, sensitisation programmes, technical training, and stakeholder dialogues.

These engagements were designed to do more than transfer knowledge. They aimed to build confidence, strengthen decision-making, and encourage collaboration across sectors.

Participants gained practical insights into:

  • Industrial Energy Efficiency (IEE)
  • Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RECP)
  • Energy Management Systems (EnMS)
  • Energy Systems Optimisation (ESO)
  • ISO 50001 and ISO 14001 standards
  • Cleaner Production Assessments (CPA)
  • Sustainable industrial financing

Turning Learning into Results

Capacity building delivers its greatest value when knowledge is applied.

Across the project, many participants returned to their organisations with new ideas, practical tools, and a clearer understanding of how to improve industrial performance.

For some, this meant reviewing production processes. For others, it involved strengthening internal energy management practices or identifying opportunities to reduce waste and improve efficiency.

These actions demonstrate that meaningful change often begins with informed decisions.

Investing in People

The greatest legacy of any development initiative is not the number of workshops conducted or reports produced. It is the people who leave better equipped to create positive change.

By investing in knowledge and skills, the project has contributed to a growing community of professionals who are helping to advance sustainable industrial development across Nigeria.

As these individuals continue to apply what they have learned, the project’s impact will continue to grow.
