BEYOND THE PROJECT: SUSTAINING THE GAINS OF INDUSTRIAL ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND CLEANER PRODUCTION IN NIGERIA

Every Project Has an End. Impact Should Not.

The formal implementation of the GEF–UNIDO Industrial Energy Efficiency (IEE) and Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RECP) Project has come to a close.

Its purpose, however, continues.

The project was never intended to create temporary change. It was designed to strengthen institutions, build capacity, encourage collaboration, and establish systems that would continue supporting Nigeria’s industrial development long after implementation ended.

A Strong Foundation for the Future

During six years of implementation, industries gained technical knowledge, institutions strengthened their capacities, stakeholders built valuable partnerships, and awareness of sustainable industrial practices expanded across the country.

These achievements now provide a platform for continued progress.

The proposed IEE, EnMS/ESO and RECP Centre, together with the expertise developed through the project, offers a pathway for sustaining technical support, knowledge sharing, and industrial innovation.

The Role of Every Stakeholder

The future of industrial sustainability does not rest with one organisation alone.

Government agencies, manufacturers, financial institutions, development partners, academia, professional associations, media organisations, and individual practitioners all have important roles to play.

By continuing to promote efficient resource use, responsible production, and collaboration, stakeholders can ensure that the project’s achievements continue to benefit Nigeria’s economy and environment.

A Shared Responsibility

Sustainable industrial development is an ongoing journey.

It requires continuous learning, innovation, investment, and partnership.

The GEF–UNIDO IEE & RECP Project has demonstrated what is possible when these elements come together.

The next chapter belongs to everyone committed to building industries that are productive, competitive, and environmentally responsible.

That is the lasting legacy of the project.
